In the 2022 National Elections Studentsโ Preference survey released by thebarrister on April 9, 2022, more than 90% or 374 out of 411 San Beda University-College of Law students answered that they will vote for Vice President Leni Robredo as President in the May 9, 2022 Presidential Elections. Similar surveys from different schools and universities also showed the same data. With the results of the elections, it was not surprising then that most of my fellow law students were disappointed, if not heartbroken. Some even questioned if it is still worth pursuing the study of law and becoming a lawyer given the alleged irregularities surrounding the whole elections and perhaps a continuation of the current political climate for the next six years.
Indeed, it is heartbreaking to be on the losing side, particularly in the recent elections. However, our aspiration of becoming lawyers must not depend on who is in power. In addition to our personal reasons, we must strive harder to become defenders of the law, of the marginalized, and of the oppressed.
In this issue, thebarrister features content mostly relating to the 2022 National Elections and the 2020/21 Bar Examinations results. We hope that this issue may serve as a reminder to all of us in the legal field, that as we move forward to a new chapter of our country, we must remain vigilant in upholding the rule of law and in promoting social justice. People in power come and go but the fundamental principles of the law remain.
