The San Beda University-College of Law (SBU-COL) culminated its 75th founding anniversary last February 10, 2023. The Diamond Anniversary was led by the Dean’s Office, in collaboration with thebarrister, the Law Student Government (LSG), and the RGCT – Bar Operations Center (BarOps).
Organization Fair
After two years since the pandemic, the ten recognized organizations of the SBU-COL held an onsite recruitment at the ground floor of St. Maur’s building in the morning until afternoon of the event.
The organizations set up booths that flaunted their achievements, principles, and fun activities to entice the students in joining them.
thebarrister distributed copies of its publication to bring awareness to quality education and the protection of press freedom. The official student publication also had a shooting game and gave away candies to the students.
The LSG had a “Play for Wellness” through a ball shooting, photo booth, and printing center. The BarOps showcased its review materials such as the highly anticipated MemoryAid.
Both the International Law Society and the Law Debate Circle boasted their awards from debate tournaments and moot court competitions. The Legal Aid Bureau gave free stickers and Instax pictures.
The San Beda Human Rights Advocates (HRA) raised awareness on violations against human rights in an exhibit. The San Beda Law Environment Organization (LEON) handed out adoption forms for stray cats and dogs.
The Student Affairs Society (SAS) gave snacks and bookmarks. Lastly, the Vox Legis (Law Chorale) played songs that filled the area.
The fair gave the students the chance to explore, interact, and discover their interests. Said event brought the student body closer together again.
Angara Talk
In the afternoon, the Fifth Senator Edgardo J. Angara Memorial Public Lecture on Public Policy was held at the second floor of the Jonathan Sy Auditorium.
The public lecture series was titled “Faith and Mission: Protecting Human Rights and the Rule of Law” to discuss the different aspects of human rights and dignity, alongside the pertinent provisions of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) of the United Nations.
Senator Juan Edgardo “Sonny” M. Angara gave an inspirational message. The main speaker was Richard P. Palpal-Latoc, Chairperson of the Commission on Human Rights.
Meanwhile, the three discussants were Bienvenido M. Abante Jr., Human Rights Committee Chair of the House of Representatives; Undersecretary Jesse Hermogenes T. Andres of the Department of Justice, and Professor Rene V. Sarmiento of the SBU-COL.
The lecture focused on the qualms and queries about victim-blaming and shaming, enactment of human rights-related policies, and other relevant social matters. It was also an honor to the achievements and legacy of the late Senator Edgaro J. Angara.
Dinner and Ball
In the evening, the celebratory dinner and ball was held at the ground floor of the New Building in San Beda University.
To highlight the achievements of the SBU-COL, video presentations were played. The Bedan community shared a tearful night as they witnessed how the College has evolved through the years.
Atty. Nicasio C. Cabaneiro, professor of SBU-COL, was given the Lifetime Achievement Award for his unparalleled service, dedication, and loyalty to the Bedan community. Dean Ulpiano “Ulan” Sarmiento III also gave a message of gratitude and admiration to Atty. Cabaneiro
Dean Marciano “Rocky” Delson also announced the administration’s plan and layout for the construction of a new building for the College. He also shared a story on how the College was able to hurdle the difficulties brought about by the pandemic.
Several students gave song numbers that serenade the blissful night. Cash prizes were also given via raffle draw. The grand prize was a semester’s worth of tuition. The program ended with a toast, headed by Dean Delson, dedicated to the students, faculty members, and administrators.
