Last November 10, 2023, the 3rd Academic Scholars Convocation for the College of the Arts and Science, College of Nursing, College of Medicine, and College of Law for outstanding students was held online from 9:30 – 11:30 AM in cooperation with the Guidance and Counseling Office.
Rev. Fr. Aloysius Ma. A. Maranan delivered his opening remarks through an inspirational message highlighting his testament to the dedication, hard work, and prowess of the university scholars, who continually strive to honor excellence and contribute to propelling San Beda University’s vision of building a community that is fully human, wholly Christian, truly Filipino, and globally-competitive.
The Essence of Scholarship
Dr. Noel D. Atienza, Dean of the College of Medicine, resonated with the community’s “sustained and integrated response to the challenges” that has paid off well, and he said that “it is at times like this that we witness the essence of scholarship which represents the belief in the transformative power of education, the potential of individuals to make a positive impact, and the importance of fostering a society that values its future leaders and contributors.”
Going beyond the role of scholarship in ascribing recognition and support to individuals who demonstrate exceptional potential, talent, and commitment to academic and personal growth, Atty. Jun Marr Denila, College of Law Alumnus Scholar, shared his journey as a Bedan scholar. He emphasized the integral role of developing grit, discipline, and goal-setting, but more than fostering tools for academic success, he also added that collaboration, leadership, and community engagement are also salient features that were embedded in him in the course of his life as a student at San Beda University.
Embracing the Hardship, Trusting the Process
Atty. Denila encouraged Bedan scholars to “embrace hardships and failures as part of the learning process” which develops resilient individuals who can navigate life challenges. Furthermore, he also added that striking a balance between aiming for academic success and building other life pursuits is crucial for personal and professional success.
The event culminated through the awarding of certificates of the Bedan scholars from the College of the Arts and Science, College of Nursing, College of Medicine, and College of Law. Dr. Divina M. Edralin closed the event by offering concluding remarks.
