“Who do you think those people were? Those were not just ordinary people. I’m not gonna tell you their names but If I did, you wouldn’t sleep so well”.
These are words from Stanley Kubrick’s psychological thriller masterpiece, Eyes Wide Shut. His dark twisted lens takes us to an in-depth perspective of fidelity regarding marital relationships while subtly exploring capitalism, power, elitism, and themes hidden in plain sight.
There was something prophetic in this film’s message: truth is more horrifying than what it appears, both for its darkness and banality. When Stanley Kubrick, faintly exposed the existence of a ‘secret society’ through this film, he died before it was made available to the public.
The real horrors of our society are more than what meets the eye. The dreadful narratives, endless wars, vicious killings, and human exploitations that we see or hear from the news are just the surface. This reminds me that the deeper you delve in, the darker it just gets.
When you have to shut your eyes and swallow the bitter pill of silence in order to be spared, reality hits. Does nobody hear the screaming and piercing cries of the world?
While thoughts and words are supposedly free, it comes with a price when certain people are involved. Untouchable and powerful people, to say the least. The most controlling are mostly hidden. They don’t show themselves out in the open. If they do, they conceal their identities behind their masks.
I’m not gonna tell you their names, If I do, I won’t be able to write this now.
