San Beda University College of Law (SBU-COL) recently marked its 76th anniversary with a week-long celebration filled with insightful discussions, vibrant festivities, and a spirit of camaraderie. The University Week was a testament to the institution’s commitment to fostering a culture of excellence and community.

Tax Evolve: Unpacking Recent Tax Memorandums and Issuances

San Beda University College of Law (SBU-COL) and the Law Student Government (LSG) recently held a Tax Symposium entitled, “Tax Evolve: Exploring the Ease of Paying Taxes Act (R.A. 11976) and other recent relevant tax memorandums and issuances.” The seminar, on the latest developments in taxation, particularly the recently enacted Ease of Paying Taxes Act.

The event was organized by SGV & Co. and aimed to provide insights into the new tax legislation and its implications for businesses.

The symposium featured Atty. Betheena C. Dizon and Gerardo “Geri” C. Caiga, CPA, as speakers. Atty. Dizon, a San Beda Law alumna and the Principal of the International Tax and Transaction Services (ITTS), discussed the key provisions of the Ease of Paying Taxes Act, which seeks to modernize tax administration and encourage compliance among taxpayers. She highlighted the new taxpayer classifications based on gross sales and their implications.

Mr. Caiga, Senior Director for the Global Compliance and Reporting, Tax Services at SGV & Co. also

discussed the operational aspects of the Ease of Paying Taxes Act and the upcoming CREATE MORE Bill. He emphasized the importance of understanding these reforms for businesses and encouraged attendees to stay informed.

Angara Memorial Public Lecture: Laudato Si Conference on Sustainability and Equity

San Beda University also hosted the Sixth Senator Angara Memorial Public Lecture, “Laudato Si: A conference on the Nation, the Community, and San Beda University.” The event brought together students, advocates, and practitioners to discuss inclusive development, social justice, environmental sustainability, and disaster risk resiliency.

The Keynote speaker was Dr. Antonio La Vina, an environmental and climate justice advocate, highlighted the flaws in legislative processes addressing environmental concerns. He emphasized the concept of intergenerational equity in environmental legislation, calling for a paradigm shift in how we conceptualize and enact environmental laws.

Also present was Professor Karen Olivia Jimeno,

who debunked the notion of “natural disasters,” emphasizing that disasters are compounded by human-induced factors. She stressed the significance of zoning regulations and land use planning in mitigating the impact of natural hazards.

The conference inspired participants to renew their commitment to building a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable society. As the echoes of Laudato Si resonate far beyond its conclusion, San Beda University remains steadfast in its dedication to nurturing progressive individuals who will continue to make a positive impact in their respective fields, communities, and the nation as a whole.

Orgs Gone Wild in The Juris Carnival

The San Beda University College of Law (SBU-COL) concluded its annual organization fair (org fair) on Valentine’s Day. This year’s theme, The Juris Carnival, saw a gathering of SBU-COL’s recognized organizations. These included the Centralized Bar Operations, Law Student Government, International Law Society, San Beda Law Debate Circle, Student Affairs Society, San Beda University College of Law Environmental Organization, San Beda Law Human Rights Advocates, and San Beda Vox Legis (Law Chorale).

Students were enjoined to participate in various games such as toss ball on paper cups, the color game, mini golf, ring toss, balloon darts, buzzer wire, and tic-tac-toe with a twist were prepared by the organizations, with tickets available for purchase. An open karaoke session featuring performances from COL students was also a highlight of the event.

As the event drew to a close, snacks and drinks were provided for free, thanks to the LSG in collaboration with JC Marasigan Cargo Services and Zeravla International. The Juris Carnival was not just a celebration, but a testament to the unity and diversity within the SBU-COL community.
