“What, like it’s hard?”

We bet you know this line came from a movie about a blond California girl who initially entered Harvard Law School with a motivation to follow her ex-boyfriend and win him back.

Although Legally Blonde sparked several debates, we could at least agree that Elle Woods was not totally wrong and that the study of law is not hard- it is onerous! Aside from the trying years of memorizing and understanding the law and jurisprudence, Bedan law students already carry the duty to serve the public by upholding the rule of law.

But even when the study of law gets tough, our inspiration keeps us going. So, we asked Bedan law students “Who/what inspired you to pursue law studies?” This online survey yielded “parents, relatives, and loved ones” as the top inspiration of most Bedans for entering law school. Other shared inspirations were their dreams of becoming lawyers, previous happy or sad experiences, and want of career change or promotion.

Respondents were also given the option to use an alias to encourage them to elaborate on their topmost inspiration. Let us share with you our favorite responses:

“I’ve always wanted to be a lawyer to defend the life liberty and property of people who cannot even afford themselves the basic right of being defended in court. No virtue is more acknowledged as a trial of great character than trustworthiness.” -Nat

“Both of my parents are lawyers. I’ve always been in awe with how they tackle and analyze situations of every kind, whether it be political, criminal, or even current events.” -Joseph

“When I was in college finishing my degree in Social Work, we constantly engaged with members of the vulnerable sectors. Through those various fieldwork and placements, I was exposed to the sad reality that legal services are not that accessible to all – especially the marginalized. That inspired me to be a part of the legal profession and someday work with organizations and agencies that cater to those who are disenfranchised.” -Mark

“I guess no matter how I tried to shake it off, the calling was clear. Other career options only seemed like interests, to become a lawyer and help others seems to be my life’s work.” -Princess

“What inspired me to enter law school is the idea of making it out, the glory of surviving through law school and becoming a lawyer is what initially pushed me. However, what pushed me further is that I am of actual help to those people who are less fortunate as seeing Facebook posts of lawyers being paid with crabs or even a bunch of street food is uplifting because everybody deserves justice. I wish to uphold the standard of fairness and equality, especially with those who have less in life.” -Hope
