The 21st century is the “Age of Knowledge,” and the different technological advancements are proof of progress of the current era. However, if the 21st century is the so-called “Age of Knowledge” then how come Filipinos are still struggling with the idea of rational thinking? Is the 21st century really the “Age of Knowledge,” or is the Philippines just regressing in terms of critical thinking?
In today’s society, people appear to be more aware of the different issues present in their society, with all the fake news and troll bots on social media. However, the age of reason seemingly reveals a troubling paradox: madness appears to thrive alongside enlightenment. The lack of rational thinking leads to chaos, yet this abnormality also results in another person criticizing society.
Critical awareness frees us from social tutelage. The ability to perceive is not enough because not everyone can reflect on social situations. However, people do not want to think for themselves, but apparently, they think they are discerning enough.
Change is prevalent, and with our culture evolving, many Filipinos have now embraced discernment. That being said, there is a need to cultivate this so that we can believe that in the future, Filipinos will have a more critical notion of society–where everyone can think for themselves and not just follow the crowd or be pseudo-woke individuals behind their screens.
We must envision a day when the term “Pinoy Pride” is not a rare occurrence. The Philippines should be a country foreigners look up to because of the various accomplishments Filipinos have attained, not only in sports, singing, or dancing, but also in the academic and intellectual fields. These aspirations for the Philippines are not far from reach; all we have to do is hope and dare to think critically.
